Tavern Co, Smithdown Road 🥞

Every time I tell people that I have a blog about breakfast, they almost always ask if I’ve been to the Tavern Company. Up until last Sunday, I had only had heard about about the breakfast wonders that happen on Smithdown Road. Now I know fully well why there’s always a queue out the door to eat breakfast at the Tavern.

We arrived at around 10:30am on a Sunday morning and it was busy. The Tavern Co serve breakfast from 7am and does not take morning reservations. It has seats outside if you don’t want to wait inside at the bar, a very European idea. The Tavern use the cleverest intercom system to call out your name when your table is ready. You give in your name and party size to the host, who then gives you a waiting time. When you’re table is ready, they call your name on what I can only describe as an old fashioned boxing match microphone. I loved it! We where told the wait would be half an hour, so we took a stroll down Smithdown before arriving back a few minutes before our name was called.

Despite the morning rush, we were seated quickly and offered unlimited tea and coffee. After our Indian breakfast experience at Dostana, I feel like all breakfasts should come with mandatory unlimited tea and coffee.

After drooling over the menu I decided on the Breakfast at Tiffany’s with bacon, and Jon went for the Full English. My parents where also dining with us and ordered a Full English, and Lighter Appetite with sausage. It was so busy but all of the staff where so friendly and quick. Another top up of our drinks, and the breakfast was here in no time.

The Breakfast at Tiffany’s comes with scrambled eggs with crispy bacon (or sausage pattie) and the fluffiest pancakes I’ve ever tasted. I drenched mine in the side serving Bobby’s maple syrup and only took one picture before tucking in – I was hungry and it was that good.

The Tavern’s Full English has been voted the Nation’s Best Full English and it is easy to see why. Sausage, bacon, fried egg, black pudding, grilled tomato, mushrooms, baked beans and toast – it is literally the works.

After hearing so many good things about the Tavern, I’m so glad I experienced the breakfast for myself. I’m already planning my next visit and I think you should too.

The Tavern Co have been feeding the people of Liverpool since 1990. They serve breakfast and brunch from 7am to 2:30pm every day. They have a website here, and can be found on Facebook, Instagram @tavernco and Twitter @TavernCo.
